Description
400 Ricardo CANALS Y LLAMBI (1876–1931)
Flamenco party in Barcelona, circa 1896
Pastel
Signed lower left
49 x 60 cm
Produced around 1896, this pastel dates from Ricardo Canals’s early years in Barcelona, when he was a regular at music halls, cabarets and popular entertainment venues that fuelled his inspiration. The flamenco dance scene reflects his attachment to costumbrismo, a movement celebrating Catalan traditions, customs and folklore through direct observation of everyday life. The vibrant treatment of the pastel and the attention paid to the dancers’ movements also reveal the influence of Edgar Degas’s compositions, whose artistic approach Canals adapts to a profoundly Hispanic subject.
