Our painting is an autograph replica by Rigaud of the Portrait de Laurent du Mesnil (see A. James-Sarazin, Hyacinthe Rigaud, Dijon 2016, vol. II, p. 390, P 1170, reproduced).
Born near Argentan, Laurent du Mesnil joined the army as a volunteer in 1667, was ennobled in 1688, made a knight of Saint-Louis and took part in the Portuguese campaign under Philip V.
The sitter is in a three-quarter bust, in a style typical of Rigaud's portraits from around 1710. The head is turned slightly in a different direction to the bust, a process used by the artist to give the figure dynamism and relief. He is wearing a large, richly draped velvet coat, held in place by a brooch or pin - a sign of a certain elegance and deliberately meticulous presentation. This type of clothing is similar to that found in several of Rigaud's portraits from the same period, in particular certain portraits of aristocrats or high officials, such as the portrait of the Prince of Courtenay (see A. James-Sarazin, op. cit., P 172, reproduced).
We would like to thank Ariane James-Sarazin for confirming the attribution of our painting following her visual examination on 19 January 2026. She identified the workshop's involvement in certain parts of the garment.
