Paul Emile BOUTIGNY (1854–1929) Sailors Setting Sail from Toulon Oil on canvas 74 x 92 cm Signed lower left: E Boutigny Exhibition frame in wood and gilded stucco A member of the Société des artistes français, Paul Emile Boutigny exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1876 onwards and was awarded a silver medal at the 1889 and 1900 World’s Fairs. A painter of history, mainly military subjects, he also produced a number of portraits of prominent figures, landscapes and genre scenes. He was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1898, with Fernand Cormon as his sponsor. He was also the founder, in 1898, of the satirical, artistic and literary magazine Cocorico, which he established with the help of Alfons Mucha.
