Description
Eugène ISABEY (1803–1886) Seashore, the Storm Approaching Oil on panel 50 x 65 cm Signed lower left with the artist’s monogram A certificate of authenticity by Mr Michel Rodrigue, honorary expert member of the Union Française des Experts, will be included with the work Eugène Isabey dominated marine painting in France during the July Monarchy (1830–1848) and established a direct link between the British Romantics — Joseph Mallord William Turner and Richard Parkes Bonington — and the Impressionist precursors, Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind. Son and pupil of Jean-Baptiste Isabey, he drew little inspiration from the classicism instilled by his father, preferring Romanticism with the sky and the sea remaining his principal source of inspiration, as in the painting we present here. Isabey made his debut at the Salon in 1824, where he was awarded a first-class medal. In 1832, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour. In 1855, he was awarded a first-class medal at the Great Exhibition and continued to exhibit until 1878. His works are held in France and across Europe, notably at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Wallace Collection and the National Gallery in London.
