Ernesto Icaza occupies a prominent place in Mexican art, his work evoking the daily life of the charros and rural life. Like the gaucho in Argentina or the cowboy in the United States, the charro embodies a figure of the Wild West from a bygone era, now inextricably linked to the national identity. Icaza’s work is characterised by a multitude of scenes from the lives of the charros, the result of direct observation and personal experience. In addition to his paintings, he also took part in the suertes, the nine specific events organised as competitions between haciendas, one of which involved capturing wild bulls with a lasso.
Created in a naïve style—Icaza having received no formal artistic training—his works exude an authenticity unmatched by any other painter of the genre, making him, as curator Fernando Gamboa put it, the ‘charro pintor de charros’.
