Born in Transylvania (now Romania), Géza Vastagh came from a family of artists; his father was also a painter, and his brother, nieces and nephews became sculptors. He studied in Munich and specialised in genre and animal painting. In 1888, a painting of lions earned him the György Ráth Prize. Vastagh exhibited at the Paris Salon and received an honourable mention at the 1900 World’s Fair. Known and renowned for his works featuring an abundance of wild and exotic fauna, it is big cats—and lions in particular—that remain one of his favourite subjects.
