Reliquary-monstrance depicting Saint Charles Borromeo (1538–1584), Northern Italy, second half of the 17th century
Reliquary in blackened wood, bronze and gilded metal, of an architectural form with a Jesuit-style pediment featuring scrolls, adorned with two columns in repoussé silver-plated metal and a gilded bronze decoration of putti and scrolls; centred on an oval miniature painted on copper depicting the left profile of Saint Charles Borromeo, Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan, after Ambrogio Figino, with a blackened and gilded wooden frame; in the lower section and on the pediment, three oval medallions containing relics of saints, including Saint Placidus and Saint Grano, set within a paderolle decoration, with a gilded bronze frame featuring repoussé plant interlacing.
