Description
Early 20th-century ITALIAN school, comparable to the works of Alceo DOSSENA (1878–1937) Madonna and Child White marble carved in bas-relief, rectangular in shape, with moulded borders featuring stepped details, bearing the abbreviations MR for Mater Regina and OM for Omino Mariae H: 68 - W: 69 - D: 14 cm Provenance: Acquired by the current owner’s grandfather from a Florentine antique dealer circa 1910–1930 The work we present here is stylistically close to the compositions of Alceo Dossena, whose skill as a sculptor enabled him to draw inspiration from and skilfully interpret works from Antiquity and the Italian Renaissance. His works, acquired by unscrupulous art dealers, were sold as period sculptures without his knowledge. The artist sought to restore the truth and was successful. Although the work on display is unsigned, the treatment of the eyes and hands, and the background with a moulded frame serving as a window from which Mary and her Son emerge, support the suggestion of a connection with other Madonnas by the artist.
