This panel most likely comes from a type of casket, made in Venice around 1600 and used as reliquaries, jewellery boxes, but also as a case designed to hold linen blessed by the Pope and presented to the male heirs of the great Catholic ruling houses. Marie de Médicis, Queen of France (1573–1642), is said to have received a similar chest filled with baby clothes blessed by Clement VIII (1536–1605) to celebrate the birth of her son.
