Tobacco grater attributed to the workshop of César Bagard, 17th–18th century
made of fruitwood, boxwood or St Lucia wood, the hinged lid decorated with a bas-relief coat of arms beneath a marquis’s crown and scrollwork, the reverse side decorated with an illustration of the fable of The Fox and the Grapes, depicting a fox attempting to catch bunches of grapes, from whose mouth the phrase ‘they are too sour’ escapes
