Description
A pair of Louis XIV-style candelabra In chiselled and gilded bronze, the round top features garlands of laurel, the shaft is openwork with scrolls highlighted by acanthus leaves, between which are female masks surmounted by shells; the tripod console base is finished with scrolls of acanthus leaves and a leaf-decorated base in the centre. H: 127 - Diameter of the tray: 32 cm In 1696, the Académie provided a very precise definition of these torch holders: ‘a kind of very tall pedestal table on which one places a torch, a girandole or candles, in the halls of palaces and large houses. ’ The purpose of these pieces of furniture was to carry girandoles into the various rooms of a residence and thus provide lighting that complemented that of the chandeliers and sconces. The designs were the work of ornamentalists such as Marot, Bérain and Lepautre.
