Description
A pair of candlesticks of the ‘quiver’ design supplied to Napoleon at Fontainebleau, Empire period in chiselled Amati-style gilt bronze, the cylindrical shaft is partly smooth, decorated with a frieze of palmettes at the top and bottom, flaring at the top, resting on a circular base adorned with a broad frieze of quatrefoil flowers. Attributed to Thomire, Duterme & Cie, bronze manufacturers and gilders, 15 Rue Taitbout, Paris. H: 26.5 cm – Diam: 13 cm. History In 1809, Thomire, Duterme & Cie delivered several pairs of this model to the Château de Fontainebleau for Emperor Napoleon’s private apartments (see Samoyault, 1989, pp. 184 and 185, nos. 168 and 169). The Mobilier National has in its collections two candlesticks from one of these pairs, which the 1810 inventory mentioned in the third salon of Prince’s Apartment No. 1 and which left the Château de Fontainebleau in 1898 (GML 6430/1 and 2. GML 6430/1). In 1812, the “Maison Thomire Duterme et Comp. bronzeworkers and gilders at 15 Rue Taitbout, Paris” also delivered to the Garde-Meuble for the Élysée Palace, according to the certified statement of 1 December 1812, several “pairs of candlesticks 10½ inches high, the shaft shaped like a quiver, the lower part of which has a leaf ornament set upon a rich leaf ornament fitted onto a round base with a crown of small flowers, the quiver terminating in a leaf capital; the said candelabra in chiselled bronze, gilded with a matt finish and the plain parts burnished (at) 120 (francs per pair)”. Four pairs were intended for the grand apartments on the ground floor, two for the grand salon and two for the bedroom, with two further pairs also intended for the Empress’s bedroom on the first floor.
