This bust is part of the Orientalist output of the Goldscheider workshop in Vienna during the second half of the 19th century. Under the leadership of Friedrich Goldscheider, the firm distinguished itself through the quality of its modelling and a pronounced taste for exotic figures, inspired by an idealised Orient, which was very much in vogue in the European decorative arts of the period. These works, straddling the line between sculpture and decorative art, bear witness to the dialogue between academicism, naturalism and the Orientalist imagination.
