The plaster cast of the Lion with a Serpent was exhibited at the 1832 Salon, and the subject—which has also been interpreted politically—occupies a unique place in the sculptor’s career. Its success led the king to commission a marble version, which was ultimately abandoned in favour of a bronze version, intended to be installed in front of the Tuileries Palace in 1836.
