Description
After Antoine-Louis BARYE (1795–1875) Lion with a snake Bronze with a reddish-brown patina H: 26 – W: 35.5 – D: 17.5 cm Signed Barye Bibliography: Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, Barye, the catalogue raisonné of sculptures, Paris, 2000, model listed under no. A 51, p. 174 The plaster cast of the Lion with a Serpent was exhibited at the 1832 Salon, and the subject—which has also been interpreted politically—occupies a unique place in the sculptor’s career. Its success led the king to commission a marble version, which was ultimately abandoned in favour of a bronze version, intended to be installed in front of the Tuileries Palace in 1836.
