‘The Desperate Woman’ depicts a young nude woman—one of the artist’s favourite subjects—seated on a rock, in a state of intense dramatic tension. The artist used such works as a formal repertoire in various projects, including the ‘Monument to the Courtesan’, between 1895 and 1902. ‘The Desperate Woman’ was cast in bronze by Susse from 1910 onwards
