Jean Després (1889–1980)
A leading figure in 20th-century French goldsmithing, Jean Després (1889–1980) developed, from the 1920s onwards, a distinctive Art Deco style, characterised by geometric and mechanical forms, which is also evident in his famous ‘motorised jewellery’. His extensive body of work in silversmithing is distinguished by its understated yet powerful forms, applied to a vast repertoire of silverware and tableware.
Working in silver, as well as pewter and silver-plated metal, he favoured geometric forms with frequently hammered surfaces, a hallmark of his work. Strings of pearls, spheres and geometric motifs rounded out his decorative vocabulary. Després continued this body of work after the Second World War and into the 1970s, revisiting and adapting certain designs over long periods.
Lots 1155 to 1169 come from a private Swiss collection.
