Description
[Manuscript]. [History]. Major periods in history. 18th century. Small quarto (18 x 14 cm, including binding), period scaly calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands, brown morocco title label, ornate panels, triple gilt fillet on the covers, gilt edges (gilt caps and 2 corners exposed, some scuffing). A neat manuscript in ink on laid paper, written in a single hand. It comprises a first part, ‘Major periods of history’, describing 12 periods up to Charlemagne ([1] folio (title), 9 paginated pages), followed by ‘Succession of the Kings of France’ from Pharamond to Louis V, known as the Slacker ([12] pages), [12] blank folios), followed by ‘Excerpts from the first [–third] volume of President Hénault’s History of France’ ([1] folio (title page), 113 paginated pages), covering the period up to the end of the reign of Louis XIV. After 4 blank leaves, the following appears at the end, in another hand: ‘!First General Federation of the 83 departments of France, which took place on 14 July 1790’ ([3] pages). Enclosed: Miscellaneous writings. Volume 47. 18th century. In-8, speckled havana calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands, fawn-coloured title label, volume number stamped, decorated panels, gilt bookplate (with scrollwork at the top and bottom of the spine). A collection of quotations, notes and observations extracted from a work, with cross-references to the original pages. A modern note indicates that this is likely to be the *Mélanges curieux* attributed to Saint-Evremond, 1706. Written in the same hand in ink on laid paper, the volume consists of a title leaf, followed by pages numbered from 14705 to 15000. Provenance: library of the Cistercian Abbey of Cîteaux (gilded ex-libris). Comprising 2 volumes.
