Description
[Manuscript]. [Lille]. CARPENTIER (Paul). Poesies. Insulis, sibi collegit, 1884. Square 8vo (approx. 18 x 13.5 cm), contemporary coffee-coloured sheepskin with period corners, spine with five raised bands, author’s name, title, fleurons and gilt fillets, gilt head (scuff marks). An extremely rare (or perhaps unique?) collection of poems compiled by Paul Carpentier, a lawyer born in Lille in 1861. The title page is printed in red and black and the volume appears to be autographed, but the quality is such that it is hard not to assume it is handwritten; indeed, this is undoubtedly the case for certain leaves towards the end. It consists of a title leaf, the main body paginated from 2 to 111, followed by [8] leaves also containing poems, [19] blank leaves and [4] pages of tables. Not all the poems are written in the same hand; almost all are dated, with the most recent dating from 1905, which is later than the date on the title page. Most are light-hearted in tone and may not all have been composed by Carpentier, as the phrase ‘sibi collegit’ on the title page might suggest. This collection appears to reflect the leisure pursuits of a circle of friends in Lille, most of whom were lawyers. Autograph ex-libris signed by the author, dated Lille, 1884, to his friend Charles Le Thierry. Enriched with a handwritten poem and a signed autograph note. A poem (pp. 72–74) alludes to several figures from Lille, including the author and the recipient: ‘Triolets for the Mâchoire d’Âne dinner on 4 January 1886’. Provenance: Charles Désiré Le Thierry d’Ennequin (Lille, 1860 – Paris, 1929), lawyer, sculptor and avid traveller (engraved coat-of-arms bookplate and a note from the author).
