Description
[Map]. [English Channel]. CLERMONT. Map of the Canal or the English Channel from its entry into the Atlantic Ocean, past the islands of Ouessant and the Isles of Scilly, to the German Sea and the Strait of Dover, or the Pas de Calais. Engraved by Glot. In Paris, by Esnauts and Rapilly; in Brest, by Priston and Fournier, 1780. A copper-engraved, coloured map, approx. 76 x 109 cm, mounted on canvas, folded to 20 x 14 cm, in its original salmon-coloured cardboard slipcase with gilt edges, title on a piece of blue paper (slipcase worn).
A beautiful, decorative and highly detailed map of the coasts depicted, adorned with an elegant title cartouche in the top left-hand corner, and featuring three insets in the bottom right-hand corner showing the Channel Islands. The author may be Jacques Clermont (1752–1827), an engineer and geographer from Savoy; see Tooley, *Dictionary of Mapmakers*, 1979, p. 120.
