Description
[Map]. [Seine]. MAP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE SEINE. Produced in 1839 at the General War Office under the supervision of Major-General Pelet, based on surveys carried out by officers of the General Staff. [Paris], [War Department], 1839. Engraved map in 9 sheets, each approx. 42 x 52 cm including margins, mounted on canvas, folded in a marbled cardboard slipcase measuring 22 x 14 x 4.5 cm (slipcase worn). An important map on a scale of 1:40,000, engraved on steel; the lines and water features by Chartier, the lettering by Carré, and the terrain details by Soudan. If assembled, the map would measure 100 x 136 cm, including the frame. On the reverse of each sheet is a label from the Parisian dealer Lanée, successor to Longuet.
