Description
ZAMBECCHARI (Lodovico, pseudonym of Juan Antonio de Vera). To the great, pious and most blessed Pope Urban VIII. In Orléans, with the permission of the authorities, n.p., 1633. In-4, 44 pp., in sheets (damage including a fold mark in the fourth sheet, a hole running through the volume, wax stains, and discolouration).
An exceedingly rare work; apart from one copy held at the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, we have found no other examples in public collections or on the market.
This scathing satire directed against Pope Urban VIII is the work of Juan Antonio de Vera y Figueroa (1583–1658), a Spanish diplomat, historian and writer. This clandestine edition, bearing a fictitious address in Orléans and published under a pseudonym, was most likely printed at the author’s own expense in Venice, where he served as ambassador. An ardent supporter of the Spanish monarchy, Vera y Figueroa never ceased to criticise the Pope’s weakness in the face of heresy and his collusion with France.
