SMELLIE (William). A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Childbirth, translated from the English by Mr Smellie, … by Mr de Préville, … To which has been appended Rooenhuisen’s secret in the art of midwifery, translated from the Dutch. Paris: P. Fr. Didot the Younger, 1756–1774. 4 volumes in-8, contemporary speckled havana sheepskin, spine with 5 raised bands, red title labels, stamped volume numbers, decorated panels, marbled edges (2 cap bands missing, corners worn, water stains in vol. 4, browning). The work is illustrated with 40 copper-engraved plates. A collection, bound in uniform contemporary bindings, of all the volumes comprising this treatise, from various editions. Volumes 2 (1756) and 3 (1765), entitled ‘Observations sur les accouchemens’, belong to the first French edition; volume 1 is dated 1771, and volume 4, 1774. The title label of volume 1 has been cut off. Four sheets of 19th-century handwritten notes on obstetrics are included. Provenance: Pierre Lagier (former owner’s signature crossed out on the title pages).
