Description
[Judaica]. FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS. A new translation of the historian Josephus, from the Greek… by the Reverend Father Gillet. Paris: H.-G. Chaubert and C. Hérissant fils, 1756 (vols. 1 & 2), /1757 (vol. 3), 1767 (vol. 4). Four volumes in-4, contemporary speckled havana calf, spine with 5 raised bands, brown and fawn title and volume number labels, decorated panels, double gilt fillet on the edges, red edges (minor defects including slight rubbing, one corner worn, margin restored on p.71 of vol. 4).
This edition comprises: Volume 1: The Life of Joseph, written by himself; Jewish Antiquities, Books I–VI; Volume 2: Jewish Antiquities, Books VII–XIII; Volume 3: Jewish Antiquities, Books XIV–XX; Volume 4: The Jewish War; Flavius Josephus’s Reply to Appion.
Illustrated with a portrait of Guillaume de Lamoignon after Valade, engraved by Daullé, as a frontispiece (stains and a tear in the corner), and with 7 copperplate engravings, including a map, in the first volume.
