MIRABEAU (Victor Riquetti de). *L'ami des hommes, ou traité de la population*. New edition, expanded to include a fourth part and summaries. No place, no publisher, 1758–1760. Six parts in 3 quarto volumes, V pp., [1] fol., 192 pp.; [1] fol., 266 pp., [2] fol.; [1] blank folio, [3] folios, 263 pp. + [4] folios, 278–80 pp. + VIII–167 pp.; [1] folio, 279 pp., [2] fol., frontispiece engraved on copper by Fessard after Blakey, contemporary marbled havana calf, restored caps, spine with 5 raised bands, title and volume number label in garnet and brown morocco, ornamented panels, double gilt fillet with notches, red edges (minor tears to two cap ends and at the tail end of one spine; water stain on the frontispiece, followed by sporadic staining, a few leaves browned).
The most comprehensive of the collected editions of Mirabeau’s works. It contains, in first edition, the major texts that bear witness to the author’s adherence to physiocratic theories, composed after his meeting with Quesnay. These form parts 4, 5 and 6 of the collection; the first three parts contain *L’Ami des hommes*, originally published in 1756, and here in its second edition.
Provenance: Mariette Auriol, from a family of merchants in Montauban, where a townhouse bears this name (repeated stamp, ‘Cabinet de Mariette Auriol’, 19th century).
(INED, 3194; Kress, 5735; Goldsmiths 9317; Einaudi 3941; Say, II, 294).
