Description
[QUESNAY (François)]; DUPONT DE NEMOURS (Pierre-Samuel) [Ed.]. Physiocracy, or the Natural Constitution of the Government Most Advantageous to Mankind. A collection published by Du Pont... In Leiden, and available in Paris from Merlin, 1768. 8vo, CXX–172 pp., in French, red half-shagreen with 19th-century corner pieces, spine with 5 raised bands embossed without foil, gilt title, double gilt line bordering the panels, gilt line on the covers (small stains on the spine; foxing, some yellowed leaves, last page soiled).
Extremely rare first edition of the first volume, from the second print run (only a few copies of the first print run bearing the Beijing address are known to exist). A second volume had previously been published in 1767. The work constitutes the principal publication of the Physiocrat school. It contains a large number of Quesnay’s works which had previously appeared only in journals with limited circulation. Revised and supplemented by Dupont de Nemours, these articles are here made available to a wider audience for the first time.
Illustrated with a copperplate-engraved frontispiece by Ozanne after Jeaurat; woodcut vignette on the title page. A copy with generous margins. An old signature in the corner of the title page, with a slight smudge in the margin of the frontispiece. (INED 1618; Kress 6548; En français dans le texte 163).
