Geneva: published by the Associated Booksellers, 1775. 3 vols. in-4, [2] folios, IV–VIII–719 pp. + [2] folios, VIII–662 pp. + [2] folios, VIII–658 pp., contemporary tortoiseshell-coloured calf, spine with 5 raised bands, title and volume number labels in fawn calf, decorated panels, triple gilt fillet on the covers, double fillet on the edges, marbled edges (corners worn, superficial scratches on the covers; discolouration). First edition in quarto format, in which the passages omitted from the previous edition—published in seven octavo volumes—have been restored. Diderot, the Baron d’Holbach and Naigeon contributed to the drafting of this major work on the philosophical and political thought of the Enlightenment. In particular, it sets out new ideas opposing colonisation, the slave trade and slavery. “One of the key works of the crisis of the Ancien Régime” (Michel Delon, in: *En Français dans le texte*, no. 166). The illustrations consist of a portrait of the author, engraved on copper by Le Grand after Cochin, 7 plates, 4 fold-out maps as inserts, and 3 vignettes within the text, all engraved on copper.
