Description
BOULANGER (Nicolas-Antoine); [DIDEROT (D.)]; [HOLBACH (P. H. D. d.')]. Works. Published in Switzerland by the Imprimerie Philosophique, 1791. 10 vols. in-12, contemporary cream-coloured cardboard binding with natural edges, title, volume number and floral motif gilded (some corners blunt, slight rubbing on the caps; faint discolouration at the margin of vol. 4 and on a few leaves of vol. 9; a faint stain at the margin of the very first leaves of vol. 8). A new collective edition of the works of Nicolas-Antoine Boulanger; the first had been published by Baron d’Holbach in 1775. He is, moreover, credited with the rewriting – if not the authorship – of two important texts included here: *Le Christianisme dévoilé* and *Recherches sur le despotisme oriental*. An engineer with the Ponts et Chaussées and a man of letters, Boulanger (1722–1759) contributed several articles to *L’Encyclopédie*, and by no means the most innocuous ones, notably ‘Déluge’, ‘Corvée’ and ‘Société’. The ‘Extract from a Letter on the Life and Works of Mr Boulanger’, which serves as an introduction to this series, is by Diderot. Regarding the links between Diderot and Boulanger, see the study published by Paul Sadrin, ‘Diderot and Nicolas-Antoine Boulanger’, in *Recherches sur Diderot et l’Encyclopédie*, 1988, no. 4, pp. 42–47: https://www.persee.fr/doc/rde_0769-0886_1988_num_4_1_946 Modern bookplate: Tincelin, priest.
