Description
VOLTAIRE. *La Henriade*, an epic poem in ten cantos. Paris, printed by Firmin Didot, 1819 [–1823]. In-4, XL–350 pp., [1] f., French, bound, cherry-coloured morocco with a long grain, spine with 4 flat raised bands, title, place and date gilt, panels decorated with a large gilt stamp, covers adorned with a broad border comprising several gilt fillets and large gilt angular fleurons, gilt scrollwork with cut-outs, multiple fillets and large gilt angular fleurons adorning the fillets, gilt edges [Purgold] (a tear at the edge of a cap, a few stains on the binding and superficial scratches on the covers). A highly regarded critical edition, prepared by P.-C.-F. Daunou, who annotated the text and discussed the critical observations of La Harpe and other authors. Begun in 1819 and completed in 1823, it is illustrated with a portrait of Henry IV after Gérard, framed by Percier and engraved by H. C. Müller, as a frontispiece, and with a plate engraved after Gérard by H. Dupont. Printed on vellum paper, the print run was limited to 200 copies. This copy is enhanced by a luxurious binding by Jean-Georges Purgold (1784–1829), a German bookbinder regarded as one of the greatest of his time: his bindings rivalled those of Simier or Thouvenin. Provenance: Library of the Château de La Roche-Guyon, formerly owned by Louis-François de Rohan-Chabot, now in the La Rochefoucauld collection (seal on the title page). (Bengesco, no. 441.)
