[Natural History]. LACÉPÈDE (Étienne de). Lacépède’s Natural History, comprising cetaceans, oviparous quadrupeds, snakes and fish. With notes and the new classification by Mr A.-G. Desmarest,.... preceded by Cuvier’s eulogy of Lacépède. Paris, Furne, later Furne, Jouvet & Cie, 1864–1867. Two volumes, large 8vo, contemporary green half-basane, smooth spine, gilt title and fillets (scuffing, slightly out of alignment, foxing, 1 plate missing). The work is illustrated with 36 engraved plates (here 35; plate 31 is missing) based on drawings by the wildlife painter Edouard Traviès, coloured in watercolour and gummed. A copy comprising both volumes from two successive print runs in a uniform binding.
