Description
(PAS DE CALAIS-62) Louis DENIS (1725–1794) – “Map of the road from Arras to Saint-Omer and Calais...” - 18th century. Engraving enhanced with watercolour on laid paper by Louis Denis in 1776, published in his famous collection of maps entitled *Le Conducteur français*. Engraved by Chalmandrier. The map begins at Arras, heads north-west through the hills of Artois via Souchez, enters the Audomarois marshes and ends at Saint-Omer. The old route is so deeply ingrained here that the town’s current southern entrance still bears the historic name Rue d’Arras; it continues across the coastal plain via Ardres, ending behind the imposing ramparts of the port of Calais. (200 x 535 mm) – Condition A-. Map with cut-off margins. Printing creases. A few foxing spots.
