Description
PARIS 1789
A large plain silver tureen or covered terrine, oval with two handles, resting on a circular pedestal chased with heart-shaped raisins. Rows of pearls adorn the rim, echoing the knob, which is embellished with leaves of two chased designs on an amati background. The two handles are reminiscent of a fantastic sea snake, with its coiled tail ending in a plume. It is engraved on the reverse of the lid with the letters B L G.
Master silversmith: Henry AUGUSTE, received his master's diploma in 1785 at the age of 26, guaranteed by his father, the Court silversmith Robert-Joseph AUGUSTE.
Between this date and 1786, Henry Auguste provided the Crown's furniture depository with seven covered casseroles for Mesdames de France (Louis XV's daughters) and a writing-table bell and an eight-cup coffee pot for the King's bedroom in Versailles.
