Yoruba ‘gelede’ mask. Nigeria. Light wood (probably kapok), traces of polychromy and bitumen. Original waxed patina. H: 34 cm Helmet mask depicting a human face with features typical of the style. The eyes are bulging and open, with a prominent nose and mouth. Scarifications highlighted with black bitumen appear in groups of three on the forehead and cheeks.
