Description
A coat-hanger with raised handles, painted in the red-figure style, the centre of which depicts a winged Eros walking to the left on a frieze of Greek scrolls within a vegetal border. The outer sides are painted with an Eros in flight holding a mirror and a young woman seated bare-chested carrying a casket. The two scenes are separated by an elegant decoration of stylised palmettes. Beige clay. Black engobe with highlights of white and yellow paint. Pre-firing distortions. Greek art, Apulia, mid-4th century BC. H. 11.3 cm. D. 31 cm. Restoration: traces of salt.
Purchased at the auction held on 19 February 1996 at Maitre Blache’s auction house in Grenoble, catalogue lot number 37.
