Description
After Théodore GERICAULT (1791–1824) Two post horses at the entrance to a stable Watercolour on paper. H_17.5 cm W_23 cm Inscribed "TG 1822" in the lower left corner. Our interesting watercolour reproduces the composition by Théodore Géricault held at the Louvre Museum (inv. RF 367). This painting, depicting two post horses in front of a stable and originating from the former Coutan Hauguet collection, was acquired by the Louvre in 1883. It dates from the latter part of the painter’s life, around 1820–1822. Probably produced within the artist’s circle, our watercolour shows a background that differs slightly from the painting and the lithograph by Villain. Indeed, the artist has added horses in the stable in place of the trough depicted by Géricault. Expert: Artéon - Expert: Quentin BONNEFOY
