Description
A large and original Oudenaarde tapestry panel in wool and silk. A scene depicting a hunt for exotic, fantastical and imaginary creatures. Inspired by the hunts of Henry IV at the Château de Nérac in the late 16th century and the hunts for fantastical animals at Wawel Castle for the Polish royal court.
Beautiful Flemish foliage.
Lined tapestry, with Velcro strips and rings.
Flanders. First half of the 17th century
H_300 cm W_320 cm
Conservation restoration. Beautifully fresh colours.
A very interesting panel featuring lively foliage in a very dense forest. Remarkable scene of a lion hunt in Binche (the lion having escaped from the menagerie). A highly decorative piece, sharing the spirit, visual vocabulary and imagination of remarkably executed animal drawings. It exudes an encyclopaedic character of the natural world. (exotic wildlife).
One can make out deer, a squirrel and a stylised unicorn on the left amongst the branches, felines, exotic birds, hybrid or fantastical creatures alongside hunters in motion and scenes of pursuit.
In the background, the architectural outline of a castle can be seen in perspective.
Border of stylised bamboo scrolls entwined with finely drawn flowers and foliage, creating the effect of a picture frame
