Description:
This work is a faithful reproduction of the ‘Cabeza masculina de Palenque’, discovered at Palenque in Chiapas and now held at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City under catalogue number 05.0-01031. The original, dating from the Late Classic period of the Maya, circa 600–900 AD, comes from the funerary context of the Temple of the Inscriptions and was found beneath Pakal’s tomb.
Through the purity of its modelling and the quiet intensity of its expression, our high-quality antique replica bears witness to the refinement of Mayan art, in which the portrait, whilst not strictly realistic, achieves a form of almost timeless presence.
