Further information:
Printed glass medallions depicting figurative scenes have been known since excavations carried out in Uzbekistan in the late 1930s unearthed a collection of coloured glass medallions depicting animals and figures hunting or playing musical instruments. Such medallions are held at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, the Tareq Rajeb Museum in Kuwait and in the al-Sabah Collection in Kuwait, the vast majority of which depict human figures. It is generally believed that these medallions were used as decorative elements set into stained-glass windows.
