Description
INTALLED SEAL Mandorla-shaped, in silver; the centre of the field is set with an intaglio on orange-coloured carnelian, engraved with a profile of Asclepius holding his caduceus, dating from the Roman period. The inscription, engraved within the almond-shaped field in Gothic capital letters between two fillets, reads: + TOME.SECRETO.LUM.ADEE.VETO, meaning: ‘Tome secreto, lucem adesse veto’, which can be translated as ‘I open in secret; I prevent the light from coming’ (referring to the document’s contents). With a loop and a dorsal lug.  Roman-era intaglio, 1st or 2nd century, and 13th-century English seal mount. Height: 3.2 cm – Width: 2.2 cm – Gross weight: 9.72 g. (Minor visible imperfections, signs of wear)
