Description
RARE PRELATE’S PECTORAL CROSS Designed as a watch, the silver ring-shaped dial features Roman numerals against a background entirely engraved with two angels, foliage, a bucranium and a male mask; a single wrought-iron hand; a gilded cruciform movement; a verge escapement; a fusee with very finely cut grooves for the gut cord; and a spring barrel entirely engraved with foliage. On the back: a fully openwork silver plate engraved with foliage, a basket of fruit and garlands of flowers, a small openwork circular cock, a flat balance wheel (oxidised), and a winding square. Baluster-style pillars. The case opens into eight removable sections at the back and also opens at the front. The case frame is in vermeil (gilded silver) and features set rock crystal (or glass) panels with bevelled edges. The upper lug is ornately worked and features a drop-down spindle at the base. France or Germany, late 17th century or early 18th century. Height: 9.7 (excluding the bail ring) – Width: 6 cm – Thickness: 3.1 cm (Minor visible damage and losses; not in working order) Description: This type of pectoral cross, designed as a cruciform pendant, was generally made for use by prelates. Our example is notable for its large size.
