Description
CABOCHON PYX
Made of embossed copper and polychrome champlevé enamel. The body is decorated with a frieze of turquoise discs featuring polychrome quatrefoils, set against a lapis blue background. The conical lid features alternating fleurons set within turquoise hearts and closed-set oval tinted glass cabochons.
France, Limoges, second quarter of the 13th century.

Description:
This pyx has been positively identified from an old photograph of objects from the collection of Julien Chappée (1862–1957). This photograph, held in the Louvre Museum’s documentation archive for works of art, thus confirms this excellent provenance, which had previously been forgotten.
