Description
BINDING PLATE
from a rectangular Gospel book, in gilded copper and champlevé enamel depicting a Crucifixion. In the centre, Christ on the cross between the Virgin Mary and Saint John; in the upper section above the cross, two angels, shown from the waist up, with outstretched wings. At the foot of the cross is a depiction of Adam emerging from his tomb. Christ is rendered in applied relief, whilst the other figures are carved from engraved copper with their heads in applied relief. The background is lapis blue, dotted with polychrome rosettes. The background of the cross is green.
France, Limoges, early 13th century.

Subsequently mounted in a specially designed frame made of precious wood.
