Description
RARE SAINT JEAN DE CALVAIRE
Carved from walnut, he stands as if at the foot of the Cross, his right hand close to his face, which is bowed in a gesture of sorrow. With his left hand, he lifts a fold of his robe and holds his emblematic Gospel book. A hollow sculpture, the back filled with a piece of wood secured with antique nails.
France, early 13th century.
Height: 117 cm – Width: 37 cm – Depth: 24 cm
(Formerly polychrome; damage, losses, restored elements)
Provenance:
– Collection of William P. Nelson (1859–1932) and his wife, née Elizabeth Cudahy (1867–1948), California.
– Collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art [Inv. No. 48.27.9], bequeathed by the above in 1948.
– Butterfields auction, 21 September 1983 [lot no. 3350G].
– Collection of Bruce Axt and Wendy Judge, New York.
– Sotheby’s, New York, 11 January 1994, lot no. 15.
– Private collection, New York.
Description:
This rare sculpture, emblematic of 13th-century France, is comparable to the one held at the Louvre [Inv. No. RF 3338]. It certainly belonged to a Calvary group created around 1220–1230 and was no doubt originally placed on a rood beam at the entrance to the chancel.
