Description
Attributed to the workshop of Giovanni GAGINI (active in the late 15th century)
A fragmentary bas-relief in slate, carved in the stiacciato style. On the left-hand side is a symmetrical floral ornament flanked by two cornucopias; on the right, Saint Jerome is depicted facing the viewer, wearing the insignia of a cardinal, seated at a desk and working with a quill on a sheet of paper, translating the Vulgate; beside him is the emblematic lion.

Description:
This type of slate bas-relief was originally placed above an external doorway in Genoa. In the 15th and 16th centuries, carved slate doorways were highly prized ornaments in the city. The Victoria & Albert Museum in London holds several examples [Inv. Nos. 7256-1859; 7254-1861 and 7255-1861].
