Workshop of Barthélémy PRIEUR (1536–1611). Mercury playing the flute Bronze figure with a brown patina. France, 17th century. Height: 19.7 cm (Casting flaws, wear and tear, minor knocks) On a black marble plinth (small chips) Provenance: – Collection of Dr Paul Horteloup (1837–1893), France. – Passed down through the family to the present day. Description: A rare example of a model now attributed to Barthélemy Prieur, a sculptor active at the court of Henry IV. With its mythological subject, fine craftsmanship and the rarity of known examples, this figure reflects the refined taste characteristic of the great collectable bronzes of the late French Renaissance.
