Description
BUST OF EMPEROR CARACALLA carved from semi-precious stones. The head and neck are carved from a single piece of rock crystal (quartz). The torso is carved from a single piece of agate (mokaite jasper) and is adorned at its centre with a cameo depicting the Rondanini Medusa. The circular pedestal on a square base is made from three pieces of bloodstone (heliotrope). Italy, Rome, late 18th century, early 19th century. Height: 20 cm – Width: 14 cm – Depth: 8.5 cm (In very good overall condition, with minute chips and a small crack at the back of the plinth)
