Description
BELL Made of bronze, with a handle in the shape of a lady’s bust wearing a veil; the body is decorated with a cherub. Apocryphal inscription: “FHEMONY ME FECIT ANNO 1569”. 16th-century style. Height: 16.5 cm – Diameter: 11.2 cm (In good overall condition) Description: The inscription on this bell refers to the famous bell-founders François and Pierre Hemony, who were active in the 17th century and particularly renowned for their carillons in the Netherlands. The date 1569, which is anachronistic given their period of activity, confirms the apocryphal nature of the inscription and the purely decorative purpose of this object. This bell belongs to a type of historicising object that appeared on the market between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, several examples of which seem to have found their way into American collections in the aftermath of the First World War.
