Description
‘TREE OF LIFE’ MOSAIC
The left-hand section features a labyrinth of various two-tone interlacing patterns. On the right, an arched panel depicts a bird perched on the scrollwork of a fruit-bearing vine. Coloured tesserae on a background of beige tesserae.
Early Christian art, 4th century AD.
170 x 145 x 4 cm
(Re-set with lime mortar on an aluminium honeycomb backing)
Provenance:
– Former S. Dalati collection, Stuttgart (Germany).
– Private collection.
Description:
The two-tone interlacing patterns of the labyrinth’s paths are reminiscent of numerous early Christian mosaics from the 4th and 5th centuries, such as the one currently housed in the Church of Saint Saturnin in Antony, which is believed to have originally come from a church in northern Syria.
