Suite of four black patina bronze plaques depicting the nymph Callisto reclining under a tree and raising her eyes in supplication to Juno. The second depicts Apollo pursuing Daphne, who is already transforming into a tree. The third depicts the metamorphosis of the Heliades. The sarcophagus of Phaeton stands in a wooded landscape, next to which Clymene embraces one of her sisters, who is beginning to transform into a tree. The last depicts Jupiter embracing Callisto in the guise of Diana. Workshop of the van Vianen brothers, early 17th century H.: 21.5 cm and 20.5 cm - W.: 19.4 cm - 19.2 cm - 18.8 cm - 18.5 cm These plates are the work of a workshop run by two brothers, Paul and Adam van Vianen. They were goldsmiths in Utrecht and also produced numerous drawings and engravings that were used as models to illustrate pieces of goldsmith's and silversmith's work, as well as bronze plaques like this one. Their inspiration reflected the literary and philosophical currents of their time, and they illustrated numerous passages from ancient myths taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses. While Adam (1568 - 1627) remained in Utrecht, taking over his father's studio, Paul (1570-1613) travelled and worked for Rudolf II in Prague, where he died.
