Two Amsterdam workshops are known to have produced small devotional paintings in gilded leather: the workshop of Marten and Willem van den Heuvel and that of Jacob Hamer.
It is difficult to attribute the production of this Crucifixion to one of the two workshops in particular, as both used the same models. Seventeen panels have now been referenced, a number of which are held in major museums: the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv n° W.8-1980), the Deutsches Ledermuseum in Offenbach am Main (inv n° 2524), the Colomer-Munmany collection in Victoria (Spain) (inv n° C812) ; Köpenick Castle in Berlin (inv no. K 9239b), the Episcopal Museum of Victoria (Spain) (inv no. 6045), the Musée national de la Renaissance d'Écouen (inv no. A15062 ), the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv no. BK 1994-1), the Museum of Leathercraft in Northampton, catalogue number unknown; and in a church in Somerset (letter from J.W. Waterer dated 27/02/1973, RP 79/2457).
