Description
-18th century Lima school
Saint Paul of Tarsus crossing the Strait of Messina in a storm
Oil on canvas
50 x 65.3 cm
Dated "ano 1778" on the reverse of the canvas This iconography combines the local tradition of southern Italy with the account in the Book of Acts, in particular Acts 27:14-44. This passage tells of the shipwreck in which Paul of Tarsus, then a prisoner, was taken to Rome. Trapped in a storm, the ship passed through the Strait of Messina before running aground on the coast of Malta.
Converted to Christianity after an apparition of Christ, Paul of Tarsus devoted the rest of his life to missionary journeys. He died a martyr around 67 AD, beheaded in Rome during the reign of Nero.
